Messaging Notifications

While notifications are extremely powerful to engage with your users, it can become overwhelming on busy or larger communities.

In this tutorial we will look at two ways we can reduce the amount of notifications that your users receive, while still providing a way to keep your users coming back for more activity.

Hide From Notifications

By default, when you receive a new private message it will be highlighted as both a Message and Notification.

While this is good for sites which only show Notifications on the Header, if you plan to use both it provides a level of duplication.

Notifications in a Site

With the new Hide From Notifications option, you can separate Messages from Notifications to keep them from showing up in both locations.

Hide From Notifications
  1. Navigate to BuddyBoss – Settings – Notifications
  2. Scroll down to the Message Notifications option.
  3. Tick the box of Hide From Notifications and press the Save Settings button.

Delay Email Notifications

Private messages between users will trigger an email to the recipient informing them of the conversation, while this is a good method to bring users back to your site. It can become resource heavy and unnecessary if someone is already online and actively in discussion.

We’ve now added the ability to delay sending new message notifications for a set time, by default this is set to 15 minutes.

During this time, if a message is left unread, the user will still be notified by email. And if there are multiple messages in the queue from a single conversation, we will now combine all those messages into one tidy email digest.

This means you’ll send less emails to your active users, while providing a much improved email experience.

Delay Email Notifications
  1. Navigate to BuddyBoss – Settings – Notifications
  2. Scroll down to the Message Notifications option.
  3. Tick the box of Delay Email Notifications, and select your preferred time between 15 minutes and 24 hours. We recommend 15 minutes by default.
  4. Click the Save Settings button.
Email Lay Out

As you can see by this clean and easy to read Email Notification, your users will be kept up to date with the latest messages, without multiple notification emails from the same conversation.
