How to Require Users to Log In Before Commenting

Introduction

To prevent anonymous comments on your public blog posts, WordPress lets you enforce user authentication. When enabled, visitors must register and log in before they can leave a comment—helping reduce spam and ensure accountability.

Enable Login Requirement for Comments

  1. In your WordPress admin, go to Settings > Discussion.
  2. Under Other comment settings, check Users must be registered and logged in to comment.
  1. Scroll down and click Save Changes.

Troubleshooting and FAQs

Q: I don’t see the “Users must be registered…” option—where is it?
A: Ensure you’re in Settings > Discussion, not the post editor. You must have Administrator privileges to view this setting.

Q: Visitors still see the comment form—what now?
A:  Clear any caching (page or object cache) and reload. If a caching plugin is active, purge its cache as well.
