The main reason is that the filters are dropdowns throughout the site, on groups, member profiles, forums. This is there because it is set that way in the default theme. In some scenarios it makes a lot of sense, in others not as much. But it would be difficult to change one without changing them all, so I have left it as is. I may customize the group one at some point.
