How to Allow Users to Write and Publish Their Own Blogs

Introduction

By default, WordPress lets users with the Author or Editor role create and publish posts without giving them full administrator access. Assigning one of these roles ensures contributors can manage content while preserving overall site security.

Assign the Appropriate Role

  1. In your WordPress admin, go to Users > All Users.
  2. Locate the user you want to empower and click Edit.
  3. In the Role dropdown, select Author (can publish only their own posts) or Editor (can publish and manage all posts).
  4. Click Update User to save changes.

Troubleshooting and FAQs

Q: What’s the difference between Author and Editor?
A:

  • Author can write, edit, and publish only their own posts.
  • Editor can write, edit, and publish anyone’s posts across the site.

Q: The user can’t see the Posts menu—what should I check?
A: Confirm they’re assigned Author or Editor. Other roles (Contributor, Subscriber) lack publishing permissions.

Q: Can I customize who sees what in the dashboard?
A: Use a role-management plugin (e.g., User Role Editor) to fine-tune capabilities beyond the default roles.

Q: How do I revert a user back to Subscriber?
A: Edit their profile under Users > All Users, change the Role back to Subscriber, and click Update User.

Q: Where can I learn more about WordPress roles?
A: Refer to the official WordPress Role Capabilities guide at https://wordpress.org/support/article/roles-and-capabilities/.
