How to Enable and Manage BuddyBoss Activity Topics

Introduction

Activity Topics bring clarity and structure to your community feed. They help organize conversations, reduce clutter, and make it easier for members to discover and engage with relevant content.

In this article, you’ll learn how to:

  • Enable Topics in the Activity and Group Activity Feeds
  • Create and manage Activity Topics
  • Understand how Topics appear and function across your site

Note: Group Activity Topics are available only in BuddyBoss Platform Pro. This feature works on both the BuddyBoss Web Platform and the BuddyBoss App (if active).

Configuring Activity Feed Topics

Enabling Topics in the Activity Feed

To enable Activity Topics:

  1. Go to BuddyBoss Dashboard > Settings > Activity.
  2. Scroll to the Activity Topic section.
  3. Check Enable Topics to activate the feature.
  4. (Optional) Check Topic Required to make topic selection mandatory when posting.
  5. Click Save Settings.

Managing Topics in the Activity Feed


Adding Activity Topics

  1. In the same Activity Topic section, click Add new topic.
  1. Enter a unique topic name.
  2. Choose the posting permission: Everyone or Admins.
  3. Click Confirm.

Editing Activity Topics

  1. Go to BuddyBoss Dashboard > Settings > Activity > Activity Topics.
  2. Find the topic you want to edit and click the ellipsis (⋯) next to it.
  1. Click Edit to change the topic name or posting permissions

Deleting Activity Topics

  1. Go to Settings > Activity > Activity Topics.
  2. Click the ellipsis (⋯) next to the topic.
  3. Click Delete.
  1. Choose to either:
  • Permanently delete the topic, or
  • Move posts to another topic.

Configuring Topics in the Group Activity Feed

Enabling Topics in the Group Activity Feed

  1. Go to the Activity Topics section in Settings > Activity.
  2. Enable Group Topics.

Note: You must enable Activity Topics first before you can enable Group Activity Topics.

Group Topics Option

You can configure how group topics are created:

  • Use global Activity Topics – Allow group organizers to select from existing global topics
  • Create custom topics – Allows group organizers to create their own topics within their groups.
  • Allow both – Gives organizers the option to use global topics and create their own.

Managing Group Activity Topics

Adding Group Topics in the Backend
  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to BuddyBoss > Groups.
  2. Edit the group where you want to add a Group Activity Topic.
  3. Scroll down to the Topics section.
  4. Click Add new topic.
  1. Enter/Select a Group Activity Topic name.
  2. Choose who can post when using the Group Activity Topic.
  • All group members,
  • Organizers and Moderators Only,
  • Organizers Only
  1. Click Confirm.
Adding Group Topics in the Frontend
  1. Open the group’s Manage tab on the front end.
  2. Navigate to the Topics Section.
  3. Click Add new topic.
  1. Fill in the topic name and posting permissions.
  2. Click Confirm.
Editing Group Topics in the Backend
  1. Go to BuddyBoss > Groups, then edit the group.
  2. Scroll to the Topics section.
  3. Click the ellipsis (⋯) next to the topic.
  1. Click Edit to update the name or permissions.
Editing Group Topics in the Frontend
  1. Go to the group’s Manage tab > Topics section.
  2. Click the ellipsis (⋯) next to the topic.
  1. Select Edit to update the name or permissions.

Note: Group posting permissions for global Activity Topics can be edited, but the topic itself cannot be renamed in the group.

Deleting Group Topics in the Backend
  1. Go to the BuddyBoss Dashboard > Groups > Select a Group > Edit.
  2. In the Topics section, click the ellipsis (⋯) next to the topic
  1. Click Delete.
  1. Choose either to permanently delete the Group Activity Topic or move posts to another one.
Deleting Group Topics in the Frontend
  1. Go to the group’s Manage tab > Topics section.
  2. Click the ellipsis (⋯) next to the topic.
  1. Click Delete and choose to delete or move posts.

Note: Global Activity Topics added to a Group Activity Topic cannot be deleted. They can only be removed from the group.

Troubleshooting and FAQs

Q: Posts aren’t filtering correctly by Activity Topic. What should I do?
A: Try clearing your site and browser caches. 

Q: What will happen if I permanently delete a topic?
A: All posts linked to that topic will remain, but without a topic assigned.

Q: Can group organizers delete global Activity Topics?
A: No. Only custom group topics can be deleted at the group level. Global topics must be managed by site admins.
