How to Configure Profile Types in BuddyBoss Platform

Introduction

Assigning profile types in BuddyBoss allows you to categorize users into specific groups, such as Teachers, Students, or Coaches, enabling a more personalized user experience.  This guide walks you through how you can configure profile types from the backend (WordPress Dashboard) and the frontend (user profile settings), ensuring flexibility and ease of management.

Configure Profile Types

Enable Profile Types

  1. Navigate to BuddyBoss > Settings > Profile in your Dashboard.

  1. Scroll down to find the option Enable Profile Types.

  1. Tick the box to enable the feature.
  2. Click Save Settings.

Create Different Profile Types

  1. After enabling Profile Types, additional options become available. Click on Profile Types (hyperlinked text) to proceed.

Add New Profile Types

  1. Click the New Profile Type  button.

  1. Enter the name of the new profile type.
    1. Example: Teacher
    2. Fill in the Plural Label and Singular Label.
  2. Click Publish.

Enable Profile Type Selection

  1. Scroll down to find the Profile Field section.
  2. Ensure that the option allowing users to self-select their profile type is enabled.

Display Profile Types on User Profiles

  1. Navigate back to BuddyBoss > Settings > Profiles.
  2. Enable Display Profile Types.

  1. Click Save Settings.

Add the New Profile Type Field

  1. In the Profile Fields section, click Add New Field.

  1. Enter a name for the field (e.g., Profile Type).
  2. Set the Field Type to Profile Type.

  1. Click Update to apply the changes.

Remove Profile Type Selection

If you uncheck the self-selection option in the Profile Field settings and update the profile type (e.g., Teacher), users will no longer be able to select that profile type from their profiles.

Assign a Profile Type to a Member

  1. A user, for example, Adele, navigates to Edit.

  1. At the bottom of the profile settings, locate the Profile Type field.
  2. Select the appropriate profile type (e.g., Teacher).
  1. Reload the profile page to see the updated profile type displayed.

Troubleshooting and FAQs

Q: Why can’t I see the Profile Type field on the frontend?
A: Ensure that the Display Profile Types option is enabled in BuddyBoss > Settings > Profiles. Also, confirm that profile types are set to be publicly visible.

Q: The Profile Type changes are not updating. What should I do?
A: Refresh the profile page and clear your site cache. Verify that the changes were saved correctly.

Q: Can users select multiple profile types?
A: By default, users can select only one profile type.
