How to Hide User Data in BuddyBoss

Introduction

BuddyBoss provides flexible privacy controls so you can decide exactly which profile details your members see. You can hide basic name fields, protect sensitive custom fields, and enforce visibility settings so only admins (or the user themselves) can view certain data. This guide walks you through hiding names, nicknames, and any other profile fields.

Hiding Names & Nicknames

  1. In your WordPress admin, go to BuddyBoss Dashboard > Settings > Profiles > Profile Names.
  2. Uncheck the boxes for First Name, Last Name, and/or Nickname to hide those fields from all non-admin users.
  3. Click Save Settings.

Only Administrators will continue to see those name fields; regular members will no longer view or edit them.

Hiding Other User Data

  1. Navigate to BuddyBoss Dashboard > Profiles > Profile Fields.
  2. Find the field you want to hide (e.g., Phone Number) and click Edit.
  3. In the Visibility dropdown, choose:
    • Only Me (visible to the user and admins only)
    • Connections Only (visible to friends/approved connections)
    • Public (visible to everyone)
  1. Check Enforce field visibility if you want to lock that setting so users cannot change it themselves.
  2. Click Update.

Note: Admins always see all fields regardless of visibility settings. To test, log in as a subscriber-level user or view in an incognito window.

Troubleshooting and FAQs

Q: I hid the name fields but they’re still visible—what did I miss?
A:

  • Confirm you saved the settings after unchecking the boxes.
  • Clear any caching plugins and reload the page.
  • Log in as a non-admin user (or use an incognito window) to verify.

Q: Users can still change the visibility of a sensitive field—why?
A: Make sure Enforce field visibility is checked when editing that field. Without it, members retain control over their own field privacy.

Q: Can I hide multiple fields at once?
A: Each field’s visibility must be configured individually under Profile Fields > Edit. Bulk hiding isn’t available by default.

Q: What do the visibility levels mean?
A:

  • Only Me: Visible only to the field owner and admins.
  • Connections Only: Visible only to users you’ve connected with (friends or approved members).
  • Public: Visible to all site visitors.
