Introduction
You can safely install and test the latest BuddyBoss Theme and Platform Pro updates on your staging or development environment without entering a license key—provided the domain name includes certain reserved keywords. This lets you validate changes before pushing them live.
License Exemption for Staging Domains
If your staging (or local) URL contains any of these keywords, you won’t need a license key to activate the theme or plugin:
- .test
- .dev
- staging.
- localhost
- .local
Example Domain Names
- online-communities.test.net
- my.example.dev.com
- test-sites.dev.online-communities.net
- example.test.domain-name.com
- localhost/mybuddybosswebsite/
- staging.example.domain-name.net
- project.local/buddyboss/
- buddybossthemesite.local/my-sample-website/
As long as your site’s URL matches one of these patterns, BuddyBoss will activate without requiring an additional license.
License Required on Other Domains
If your staging or development URL does not include one of the exempt keywords above, you must enter a valid BuddyBoss Theme license key to activate and use the theme and Platform Pro plugin.
Troubleshooting and FAQs
Q: My staging URL uses dev- but isn’t activating—what’s wrong?
A: Only domains containing the exact substrings .dev, .test, staging., localhost, or .local qualify. Prefixes like dev- aren’t recognized.
Q: I cleared caching but my local install still asks for a license key.
A: Ensure you’re accessing via a matching URL (e.g., http://localhost/… or https://mysite.test). Also clear browser cache and any server-level caching.
Q: Can I use a subdomain like beta.mysite.com?
A: No. Only the listed keywords trigger license exemption. A custom subdomain without those exact terms still requires a license key.
