How to Resolve Build Error Code E009 – Wrong KeyStore Password

Introduction

Build Error Code E009—“The provided KeyStore has the wrong key or password”—occurs when the password entered for your Android KeyStore does not match the actual certificate. This prevents the build process from signing your app.

Your KeyStore Password or Key Password in the BuddyBoss App settings is incorrect, so the build system cannot unlock the KeyStore file.

Verify Your Password

  1. In WordPress, navigate to BuddyBoss App > Configure > Android Settings.
  2. Under KeyStore Information, re-enter your KeyStore Password and Key Password exactly (passwords are case-sensitive and must not include extra spaces).
  3. Click Save Changes.
  4. Retry the build.

Regenerate the KeyStore

Do this if you have forgotten your password.

  1. Go to BuddyBoss App > Tools > Generate KeyStore.
  2. Enter a new KeyStore Password and KeyStore Alias (or leave blank to auto-generate).
  3. Fill in Certificate Information (First and Last Name required; add Organization if applicable).
  4. Click Generate, acknowledge you cannot re-download the KeyStore, then Download the ZIP file.
  5. Securely back up the ZIP—losing it prevents future app updates.

Import the New KeyStore

  1. Return to BuddyBoss App > Configure > Android Settings.
  2. In KeyStore Information, click Import.
  3. Select the ZIP file you downloaded, then click Save Changes.

Generate a New Build

  1. Go to BuddyBoss App > Build.
  2. Review Information, verify that the updated KeyStore details appear.
  3. Click Send Build Request to generate a new Android build with the corrected credentials.

Do I Need to Generate a New Build?

Yes. You must create a new build to include the corrected KeyStore credentials in your app package.

Troubleshooting and FAQs

Q: I’m certain the password is correct but still see E009—what now?
A: Ensure there are no leading/trailing spaces or hidden characters. Type the passwords manually rather than pasting.

Q: Can I restore my original KeyStore?
A: Yes—if you have a valid backup and know its passwords. Use the Import flow with your original ZIP.

Q: What if I lose both the KeyStore and its password?
A: You will be unable to update your existing app on the Play Store. You’d need to publish a new app under a different package name.
