If you want to utilize widgets then there are areas for each section of your site. If the upload photo button is not displaying then you most likely have a plugin conflict. The top menu is a BuddyPress menu, you should note that BuddyPress does not function like WordPress and has a completely different menu structure that you will miss out on with the WP admin menu. This is no simple task and out of scope since you would have the same issue with the BuddyPress default theme. I suggest you check out the BuddyPress forums for a solution.
